The Cormorants of Woodbridge

A series of outdoor sculptures on the waterside trail in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Some are situated on boats, some on posts. All await discovery as people amble along the waterside resting to take in the view they suddenly notice the bird sculptures.

The pieces are given added interest by the shadows they are designed to create, not one but two art pieces are created here, one the sculpture in itself, and two, the play of light upon it and the shadows thus created.

Great Yarmouth Waterways Sculptures

"Have you met Jim, George and Bill?

A sculpture trail of exciting temporary commissions have been

unveiled across the Venetian Waterways and Boating Lake,

which helps to tell the story of those who built the unique

grade II listed park between 1926-1928.

Created by local artist Spadge Hopkins in partnership with

regional charity Access Community Trust, who are custodians

of the unique 7 acre park in Great Yarmouth, the symbolic

artworks immortalise the 127 local men who originally

constructed the attraction as part of a relief work scheme

for the local unemployed following the First World War."

The Deben Yacht Club

The Deben Yacht Club loved their Cormorant so much that they commissioned a piece of their own for their clubhouse, which would also double up as a sign. It was galvanised to match the gate and railings. The inspiration came from a photograph from one of the exciting dinghy races that are regularly held by the club.

Landguard Nature Reserve

Felixstowe

Spadge created and fitted this piece of informative art for the lovely folk at The Languard Trust who manage the nature reserve at Felixstowe

'River for All'

The Museum of East Anglian Life rebranded as the Food Museum and as one of its first projects, the Scottish Power Foundation funded the ‘River for All’ sculpture trail with accessible pathways along the museum’s riverwalk to give visitors the opportunity to experience nature.

Spadge was one of 8 artists whose work ( 5 sculptures of birds and raptors from the local area) was selected to explore the importance of maintaining wildlife habitats in rural communities and to encourage walkers to explore the area.

YMCA East

Maquette of a shop sign for a camera shop in The Great Yarmouth Heritage Action Zone

YMCA East - 2022

Working with young people from YMCA East as part of a project funded by Norfolk County Council, Spadge and the team produced this maquette of a shop sign for a camera shop in The Great Yarmouth Heritage Action Zone.

'Ferini's Seagull'

Spadge particularly likes Pakefield. He has shown and sold work at Mikaela's Ferini Gallery for a number of years.

The atmosphere is very relaxed and gentle and it's usually sunny when he visits. There's a nice beach for a walk, a decent fish and chip shop without the queues and hype of some other places.

As a thank you he placed this seagull there.
